What is
hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is a viral infection that
affects the liver. It is caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV), which is
usually transmitted through blood-to-blood contact. Hepatitis C can cause both
acute and chronic liver disease, and if left untreated, it can lead to liver
cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer. However, with early diagnosis and
treatment, the majority of people with hepatitis C can be cured. Risk factors
for hepatitis C include sharing needles or other equipment used for injecting
drugs, receiving a blood transfusion or organ transplant before 2000 , and
having unprotected sex with someone who has sufferinf with this virus.
Why
hepatitis C happen
Hepatitis can be caused by, including viral infections, alcohol abuse, certain medications, and
autoimmune diseases.
Hepatitis viruses, such as hepatitis
A, B, C, D, and E, are a common cause of the disease. These viruses can be
spread through contaminated food or water, through contact with bodily fluids
such as blood or semen, or from mother to child during childbirth.
Excessive alcohol consumption can also
cause hepatitis, as it can damage the liver and cause inflammation. Long-term
alcohol abuse can lead to liver cirrhosis, a serious condition in which the
liver is scarred and its function is impaired.
Certain medications, toxins, and chemicals can also cause hepatitis. This is known as drug-induced hepatitis or toxic hepatitis. In addition, autoimmune diseases such as autoimmune hepatitis can cause inflammation and damage to the liver.

Ribavirin
Interferons
Each of these medication types comes with different benefits, side effects, and risks. You should know that treatments to cure HCV are not approved Trusted Source for use during pregnancy, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
These days, interferons are not commonly used to treat HCV. The newer treatments listed above are typically used instead. This is because interferons can cause a lot of side effects, and they’re not as effective for treating chronic HCV infection. However, this medication type is sometimes used alongside DAAs.
Interferon is a protein. It helps your immune system develop an immune response to viruses, including HCV.
Ribavirin
Ribavirin works by stopping viruses from replicating and spreading. It’s an oral medication that comes as a capsule, tablet, or liquid and is available in several strengths.
It’s always used in combination with
other drugs to treat hepatitis C. The most common brand name of ribavirin is
Rebetol.
