CAUSE OF HEART ATTACK
CAUSE OF HEART ATTACK
A heart attack, also known as myocardial infarction, occurs
when the blood flow to a part of the heart muscle is blocked, usually by a
blood clot. This blockage prevents oxygen and nutrients from reaching the heart
muscle, which can cause damage or death to the affected tissue.
The most common cause of a heart attack is the buildup of
fatty plaques (atherosclerosis) in the walls of the coronary arteries, the
blood vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. These plaques
can rupture, causing a blood clot to form that can completely block the artery
and lead to a heart attack.
Several factors can increase the risk of developing
atherosclerosis and, therefore, a heart attack, including:
1. Obesity
2. Smoking
3. Diabetes
4. High cholesterol
5. Family history of heart disease
6. High blood pressure
7. Age (the risk of heart disease
increases with age)
Other factors that can trigger a heart attack include severe
physical exertion, emotional stress, and drug use (such as cocaine). In some
cases, a heart attack may also be caused by a spasm in a coronary artery or a
tear in the artery wall.
